THE ARIEGE

The Ariege is situated between the Haute Garonne and Pyrenees Orientales, a region famous for its steep-sided valleys and wild mountain scenery.  In the main valley of the area, the Ariege river finds its way to the sea with the main road to Spain and Andorra running along the river bed

In the Ariege, approximately a 100 km south of Toulouse, the natural reserve “Les Couserans” can be found. Saint Girons is the capital of this region. The Couserans is a ‘forgotten’ area of the Pyrenees, with rugged and unspoilt countryside. A chain of mountains forms the frontier with Spain with Mont Valier as its highest peak. The area is made up of18 valleys each with their own characteristics maintaining their authenticity over the years. In the Couserans one can find prehistoric caves where inscriptions on the walls reveal the lifestyle and history of its prehistoric inhabitants.

When you wander through the region from Massat to Aulus-les-bains, from Seix to Castillon and via Saint Girons to Saint Lizier and the Volvestre, the beautiful diverse landscape breathes a serene calmness. There is plenty of space in the Ariege and the landscape offers many possibilities for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, mountain biking, parapenting, and golf etcetera.
